| Tuesday | 06 September 1966 | Finnish Brotherhood Hall, Berkeley, CA | Wildflower | |
| Friday | 10 September 1966 | Temple Sherith Israel, San Francisco, CA | Wildflower, SF Mime Troupe, The Group | Ross: I found an advert for this in the Berkeley Barb - it reads as follows: "Party/Dance by The Group (single adults 21-30), rock and roll, SF Mime Troupe; Sherith Israel, SF, 8:30pm, $2.50 (guests $3.50)". I had previously assumed that this was a straightforward commercial venture by promoters calling themselves "The Group". They crop up now and again and the wording of advertising, such as this example, imply that they were organising the event rather than featuring as performers. Alternatively, The Group were a band - but I very much doubt Group B. Supporting the band theory is a performance at Maple Hall in San Pablo on October 15 featuring "The Group" as well as the Just V, Purple Earthquake and others. The noteworthy thing is the cost - for September 1966, these are pretty expensive ticket prices. |
| Sunday | 11 September 1966 | Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA | Jon Hendricks Trio, Elvin Jones, Joe Henderson Quartet, Big Mama Thornton, Denny Zeitlin Trio, Jefferson Airplane, Great Society, Wildflower, Grateful Dead. Lights: Bill Ham & Co. (Benefit For The Both/And Jazz Club) | |
| Tuesday | 13 September 1966 | Finnish Brotherhood Hall, Berkeley, CA | Wildflower | |
| Friday | 16 September 1966 | Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA | Byrds, Wildflower, Play "The Dutchman" (by Le Roi Jones) | |
| Saturday | 17 September 1966 | Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA | Byrds, Wildflower, Play "The Dutchman" (by Le Roi Jones) | |
| Friday | 23 September 1966 | Memorial Gym, University of San Francisco, 2335 Golden Gate Avenue, San Francisco, CA | Wildflower | |
| Friday | 30 September 1966 | San Francisco State College, San Francisco, CA | The Only Alternative and his Other Possibilities (with Mimi Farina), Wildflower, Final Solution, Universal Parking Lot, San Francisco Mime Troupe, The Committee, San Andreas Fault (Whatever It Is) | Ross: I believe that the Grateful Dead only played on the third day (as did the Universal Parking Lot who I only found played the event through a review in the Berkeley Barb). I would guess it is unlikely that the other bands all played all three days. As for Wildflower, it is noted that they played The Steppenwolf in Berkeley on the Saturday. Alec's contract references 9/31 - and I guess that is meant to be 9/30 - which makes sense. Recollections? I am confident that Wildflower played on the Friday. |
| Saturday | 01 October 1966 | Steppenwolf, 2136 San Pablo Avenue, Berkeley, CA | Drongos, Blue House Basement, Wildflower, Second Coming (Benefit for Lowndes Co) | |
| Saturday | 01 October 1966 | San Francisco State College, San Francisco, CA | The Only Alternative and his Other Possibilities (with Mimi Farina), Wildflower, Final Solution, San Francisco Mime Troupe, The Committee, San Andreas Fault | Ross: Wildflower probably did not play the Saturday as there was a commitment in Berkeley, interestingly with The Blue House Basement who form part of the Phoenix/Mt Rushmore/Universal Parking Lot family tree. Proposal is to remove this entry. |
| Sunday | 02 October 1966 | Matrix, 3138, Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA | Wildflower, Andrew Staples | |
| Sunday | 02 October 1966 | San Francisco State College, San Francisco, CA | The Grateful Dead, The Only Alternative and his Other Possibilities (with Mimi Farina), Wildflower, Universal Parking Lot, Final Solution, San Francisco Mime Troupe, The Committee, San Andreas Fault | Unlikely that Wildflower played this date. There is a review of the Sunday event in the Berkeley barb that mentions the Grateful Dead and Universal Parking Lot. Indications seem to be that Wildflower and probably one other band played the Friday, The Only Alternative and the Final Solution the Saturady, and the Grateful Dead and Universal Parking Lot the Sunday. Additionally, the Wildflower were scheduled to play the Matrix. |
| Thursday | 06 October 1966 | Panhandle (near Golden Gate Park), San Francisco, CA | Grateful Dead, Big Brother and The Holding Company, Wildflower, Elektrik Chamber Orkustra | Corry: Wildflower and Orkustra not a certainty--I think the source is Charles Perry's book. Stephen: We definitely played Oct.6 in the panhandle the day that acid was made illegal and were interviewed by some station, I'm not sure which?? |
| Sunday | 09 October 1966 | Matrix, 3138, Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA | Wildflower | An advertisement in the Chronicle lists the Andrew Staples (7/8) and The Wildflower (9) are at the Matrix this weekend but it is thought to be a spurious carry over of the previous week's advertisement for the Matrix. Alternatively, Lightnin' Hopkins did not open on schedule - although the handbill says he played October 7 through 16.. Ralph J Gleason suggests, he opened on October 13. |
| Friday | 14 October 1966 | Tresidder Student Union, Stanford University, Stanford, CA | Wildflower | |

Stephen: Tom left to go back to school the beginning of the school year in
'66(Sept.-Oct.) and came back in Boston a year later in Sept.'67, however he
and Michael Barnard, another CCAC artist/musician (see
www.michaelwbarnard.com) opened for Wildflower as a jam duo at least one UC
Davis show while he was back at school...that may be the confusion with
Tom's name on the contract??? Ross: This is a candidate date for Tom and Michael opening for the Wildflower. It is also possible the November 5 and/or November 12 would work. The April 7 date for which a contract exists but there is a clash of dates seems like a red herring and I propose removing it. |
| Saturday | 17 December 1966 | Davis High School, Davis, CA | Wildflower | |

| Friday | 10 February 1967 | Regency Ballroom, Leamington Hotel, Oakland | Wildflower, Sparrow, Living Children, Immediate Family (This Is It) | Stephen: 02 Oct. '66 Regency Ballroom, Leamington Hotel, Oakland This Is It (Wildflower, Sparrow, Living Children, Immediate Family) archive dates say '67 but we believe it was '66. Ross: You are partially right - it was a lot earlier than October 1967 but is one of those shows that has over the years fallen foul of the US/European numbering schema for days and months - 02-10-67 or 10-2-67. It was actually, February 10, 1967. Corry: the venue address is 1814 Franklin Street. |
| Monday | 13 February 1967 | Matrix, 3138, Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA | Blues Project, Wildflower | Victor Moscoso's NR-6, alternate poster and Billboard state Blues Project elsewhere states Wildflower so assume both played. |

| Thursday | 16 February 1967 | Whisky A-Go-Go, San Francisco, CA | Peanut Butter Conspiracy, Wildflower | Corry: The SF Whisky was a topless joint, only open briefly, on 568 Sacramento. The Doors were scheduled from Feb 14 thru 26, but after only two days and 10-15 patrons a night, they got Wildflower to finish their dates. Ross: There is a clash of dates here with the last night at The Matrix with The Blues Project. My guess is that The Wildflower completed their commitment at the Matrix. |
| Tuesday | 21 February 1967 | Whisky A-Go-Go, San Francisco, CA | Peanut Butter Conspiracy, Wildflower | |

| Saturday | 04 March 1967 | Matrix, 3138, Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA | Wildflower, Sopwith Camel. Penny Nichols | Either Penny Nichols or the Sopwith Camel did not play. |
| Sunday | 05 March 1967 | Whisky A-Go-Go, San Francisco, CA | Wildflower | A "Teen Show" so the event would have been scheduled for earlier in the day than the Matrix performance. |
| Sunday | 05 March 1967 | Matrix, 3138, Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA | Wildflower, Sopwith Camel. Penny Nichols | Either Penny Nichols or the Sopwith Camel did not play. |

| Tuesday | 07 March 1967 | Matrix, 3138, Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA | The Doors, Larry Varga, Wildflower | Larry Vargo may have played instead of the Wildflower on the first two days. |
| Wednesday | 08 March 1967 | Matrix, 3138, Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA | The Doors, Larry Varga, Wildflower | Larry Vargo may have played instead of the Wildflower on the first two days. |

| Sunday | 12 March 1967 | Le Conte School Auditorium, Berkeley, CA | The Loading Zone, Wildflower, Haymarket Riot (Family Rock - Benefit for the Berkeley Parent Nursery Scholarship Committee) | |
| Tuesday | 21 March 1967 | Oakland Exposition Building, Oakland, CA | Wildflower (Teenage Fair) | Alec: The contract for the above, dated 24 February, lists Teddy and Tom – however pictures I have of the event show only Stephen, John, Michael with Larry Duncan on drums. So somewhere in-between those dates must have been when the former members left. Ross: This is intriguing - Teddy makes sense but I had Tom leaving in 1966 to return to school - the implication, therefore, is that he only went back for one semester. I have amended the dates to have Tom leave in late February and Teddy before these shows in March. We are going to have to do a lot more work on figuring the dates associated with each line-up. The advantage of identifying a lot of show dates is that the guys should be able to identify when they started & stopped playing with the band. Alternatively Tom had left and Teddy was ill - I don't know, but we need to figure this out. |
| Wednesday | 22 March 1967 | Oakland Exposition Building, Oakland, CA | Wildflower (Teenage Fair) | |
| Thursday | 23 March 1967 | Oakland Exposition Building, Oakland, CA | Wildflower (Teenage Fair) | |
| Friday | 31 March 1967 | Longshoreman Hall, San Francisco, CA | Quicksilver Messenger Service, Wildflower (Fluxfest) | Stephen: 31 Mar. '66 Longshoreman Hall, SF Flux Fest (Wildflower, Quicksilver) you have this listed as '67 but we believe it was '66. Ross: Fluxfest was definitely in 1967. |
| Friday | 07 April 1967 | Roaring Twenties, San Francisco, CA |
Alec: OK this is a confusing one. Two contracts exist (Freeborn Hall and the
Roaring Twenties), with performance times being approx the same - which one
did they play? A clue may be – Larry is on the Roaring Twenties contract,
Tom on the one for UC Davis (which was a fraternity dance). I have the
leader, union and pension copies of the latter – intimating they may not
have been filed - so I suspect it may be the Roaring Twenties, especially
seeing as Larry is on the contract of the California Hall show for April 13.
Ross: Intriguing indeed. Assuming that the Davis contract is not from a year later, and assuming that Tom did not leave just for a few weeks to be replaced by Larry, I can postulate that the Davis contract was prepared based on details that they had available from a previous contract (from December 1966) where Tom was still part of the line-up. The hypothesis: an early cut and paste error. |
|
| Friday | 07 April 1967 | Freeborn Hall, UC Davis, Davis, CA | Ross: Assumed that this event did not go ahead. I am proposing to remove it. | |
| Saturday | 08 April 1967 | KPIX-TV Studios, San Francisco, CA | Wildflower (recording "Please Come Home" and "Walking' Blues") | Alec: KPIX filming – group also performed ‘Walkin’ Blues,’ intercut with the Dead and QMS as a medley. The correct title of the programme was KPIX Reports/The Maze: Liverpool USA. I went through the entire KPIX TV archive recently looking for footage for the imminent Somethin’s Happening Here exhibition, and whilst another episode of the Maze (it was a weekly magazine programme) has survived, the one we all want to see has unsurprisingly gone walkies. |
| Thursday | 13 April 1967 | California Hall, San Francisco, CA | Country Joe and The Fish, Wildflower, Serpent Power, Kenneth Patchen, Lew Welch, Lenore Kandel, Robert Duncan, Charles Urton, David Meltzer, Tom Parkinson, George Stanley, James Broughton, Geoff Sheppard, Joel Andrews, Richard Brautigan (Joyful Alternative) | Ross: A previously known show that Wildflower had not be attributed with as they do not appear on the poster for this event. |
| Friday | 14 April 1967 | Petaluma Fairgrounds Home Arts Pavilion, Petaluma, CA | Wildflower | Alec: For Sonoma State College. Ross: Listed in the SF Chronicle as "A Wildflower Dance and Light Show". |
| Sunday | 16 April 1967 | Roaring Twenties, San Francisco, CA | Wildflower | |
| Sunday | 23 April 1967 | California Hall, San Francisco, CA | Wildflower, Big Brother and The Holding Company, Charles Lloyd Quartet | |
| Saturday | 29 April 1967 | California Hall, San Francisco, CA | Wildflower (and a selection from: Sandy Bull, Sparrow, Flying Circus, CIA, Outfit, Bearing Straight, Ancestral Spirits, Loading Zone, Richard Honeman Quintet, Epics, New Salvation Army Band, Orkustra, Notes from the Underground, Lightning Rod and the Circuit Breakers, Little Bo and Co., San Geet [Ancestral Spirits Festival - Benefit for Haight-Ashbury Karmic Bail Fund and the Church of One]) | Ross: I have never tried to figure out who played which day (the event ran 28 thru 30). Again, Wildflower do not appear on the advertising. |
| Friday | 05 May 1967 | Matrix, 3138, Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA | Wildflower | |
| Saturday | 06 May 1967 | Matrix, 3138, Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA | Wildflower | |
| Sunday | 07 May 1967 | Matrix, 3138, Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA | Wildflower | |
| Sunday | 21 May 1967 | Rendezvous Inn, San Francisco, CA | Wildflower |
Corry: (The Rendezvous Inn was a gay bar on Sutter Street, just above
Powell, on Union Square). In May of 1967, The Dead, largely holidaying and
rehearsing at the Russian River, had a regular Monday night gig at The
Rendezvous Inn. The Rendezvous was a gay bar on Sutter Street, just above
Powell, near Union Square. I don't know for certain the exact days, but
McNally says they began "a brief series of Monday nights" (p.193) and the
dates listed here are the first four Mondays in May. The band had a gig on
May 29 in Napa, so I have assumed they played the first four Mondays in
May. The Wildflower played at least some of the gigs, and their manager was
Bill Belmont (McNally, p. 288). Belmont worked for the Dead in late 1969.
Source is Dennis McNally's Dead biography. Alec: Club Rendezvous - May 21 is the only date on the contract. Ross: I have gone with the May 21 date only at this time. |

Ross: This ties in with the expected timeline and adds to my thought about the Davis contract for April 7 being based on, perhaps, an earlier contract where details were simply copied across without being checked. |

Red Dog Saloon shows in 1966: The Rationale
| Wildflower | Big Brother and the Holding Company | Notes (all from Ross unless noted otherwise) | ||
| Friday | 29-Apr-66 | |||
| Saturday | 30-Apr-66 | Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Grassroots, Sons of Adam | ||
| Friday | 06-May-66 | Red Dog Saloon, Virginia City, NV Wildflower | Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Daily Flash | The surviving poster is owned by Peter Albin and it advertises, albeit only for May 6, a show or shows by "The Holding Company & Wildflower". As Big Brother and The Holding Company were playing the Avalon Ballroom this weekend, it is reasonable to assume that if these shows took place it would have only been the Wildflower performing. |
| Saturday | 07-May-66 | Red Dog Saloon, Virginia City, NV Wildflower | Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Daily Flash | Wildflower at the Red Dog Saloon |
| Friday | 13-May-66 | 2787 Folsom St, San Francisco, CA The Charlatans, Wildflower, Electric Train, Don Garrett, The Final Solution "Band Benefit" | Red Dog Saloon, Virginia City, NV Big Brother and the Holding Company | Wildflower not available due to other commitments - so if a show happened this weekend it would be Big Brother and The Holding Company. |
| Saturday | 14-May-66 | Red Dog Saloon, Virginia City, NV Big Brother and the Holding Company | BBHC at the Red Dog Saloon | |
| Friday | 20-May-66 | Neither Wildflower nor Big Brother are available this weekend. Unknown at the Red Dog Saloon | ||
| Saturday | 21-May-66 | Muir Beach Resort, Marin County, CA Big Brother and the Holding Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Charlatans, Wildflower, Carpetbaggers, Billy Moses and the Blues Band, Erector Set | Engagement 1: Muir Beach Resort, Marin County, CA Big Brother and the Holding Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Charlatans, Wildflower, Carpetbaggers, Billy Moses and the Blues Band, Erector Set; Engagement 2: Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Love, Captain Beefheart | Unknown at the Red Dog Saloon |
| Friday | 27-May-66 | Matrix, 3138, Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA: Wildflower, Robert Baker (comedian) | Red Dog Saloon, Virginia City, NV Big Brother and the Holding Company | Wildflower not available due to other commitments - Big Brother and The Holding Company were available and likely played. |
| Saturday | 28-May-66 | Engagement 1: Matrix, 3138, Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA: Wildflower, Robert Baker (comedian); Engagement 2: 2787 Folsom St, San Francisco, CA Charlatans, Wildflower | Red Dog Saloon, Virginia City, NV Big Brother and the Holding Company | BBHC at the Red Dog Saloon |
| Friday | 03-Jun-66 | Red Dog Saloon, Virginia City, NV Wildflower | Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Grassroots, Buddha From Muir Beach, Stone Facade | Wildflower available and Big Brother and The Holding Company at the Avalon Ballroom. Likely that Wildflower played this weekend. |
| Saturday | 04-Jun-66 | Red Dog Saloon, Virginia City, NV Wildflower | Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Grassroots, Buddha From Muir Beach, Stone Facade | Wildflower at the Red Dog Saloon |
| Friday | 10-Jun-66 | Red Dog Saloon, Virginia City, NV Big Brother and the Holding Company | Ugly rumours have always been abound that this weekend saw the first performance of Ms Joplin with Big Brother and The Holding Company. But her first performance is actually at the Avalon ballroom on the June 24. Big Brother and The Holding Company were meeting their commitments up at the Red Dog. | |
| Saturday | 11-Jun-66 | Red Dog Saloon, Virginia City, NV Big Brother and the Holding Company | BBHC at the Red Dog Saloon - pre Janis. | |
| Friday | 17-Jun-66 | Red Dog Saloon, Virginia City, NV Wildflower | No doubts about the Wildflower playing this weekend at the Red Dog Saloon - as it ties in with E Clampus Vitus and ends a six week contract split between BBHC and Wildflower. Makes a lot of sense to me. This may well have been the last show at the Red Dog by Wildflower in 1966. If there were any further shows it would have been the weekend of July 1/2. Big Brother and The Holding Company do return the once after Janis Joplin joins the band - and July 8/9 looks the most likely date. | |
| Saturday | 18-Jun-66 | Red Dog Saloon, Virginia City, NV Wildflower | Wildflower at the Red Dog Saloon - ties in with E Clampus Vitus May have also played the Sunday as well. | |
| Friday | 24-Jun-66 | Avalon Ballroom, SF, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service, the GIB [Janis' 1st show] | Possibly this is the first of the Final Solution shows - perhaps playing as an audition prior to their summer stint being contracted.. | |
| Saturday | 25-Jun-66 | Avalon Ballroom, SF, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service, the GIB | Final Solution | |
| Friday | 01-Jul-66 | Fillmore, San Francisco Big Brother and the Holding Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jaywalkers | Unknown at the Red Dog Saloon | |
| Saturday | 02-Jul-66 | Monterey County Fairgrounds Big Brother and the Holding Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Gladstones | Corry found a quote (Cream Puff War #1) "it was via the Wildflower that the [Final Solution] landed their most noteworthy gig, a month-long residency...in August 1966.". We are certain that The Final Solution were playing the Matrix on July 2 but that this might be the good link between The Final Solution and The Wildflower and The Red Dog Saloon. Corry had previously figured out when listening to a recording of the Final Solution at the Matrix that there is an announcement from the stage where the MC says "We'd like to thank the Final Solution for filling in on such short notice. Tomorrow night the Great Society returns to finish up their engagement. On Tuesday we'll have a great folk-rock group from Berkeley, Country Joe and The Fish, as well as the San Francisco Mime Troupe". The Country Joe/Mime Troupe handbill shows them opening Tuesday, July 5. CJF plays later in July, also, but without the Mime Troupe. I know of no handbill or add for the week before (June 28-July 3). Groups typically played Tuesday through Sunday. The Great Society played the previous week (6/21-26), so it seems they played the week of June 28-July 3 as well, or at least the weekend. I don't know of other Great Society shows during that week. Following the assumption that the Final Solution subbed on Saturday night (as Great Society will "return to finish up" the next night) we note that Great Society played the Fillmore (per the BG Poster) on Saturday July 2. With this in mind, I am dating Final Solution Matrix show as July 2. I can now confirm that through a series of ads and a hand amended handbill that The Final Solution were actually replacing The Wildflower who were themselves replacing The Great Society at The Matrix on July 2. This leaves the Wildflower open to play the Red Dog - probably for the last time. | |
| Friday | 08-Jul-66 | Red Dog Saloon, Virginia City, NV Big Brother and the Holding Company | We know that Big Brother and The Holding Company retrned for one weekend to play the Red Dog Saloon after Ms Joplin joined up with them. This weekend provides the best match and would fill a void prior the the Final Solution beginning their summer season at the Red Dog. | |
| Saturday | 09-Jul-66 | Red Dog Saloon, Virginia City, NV Big Brother and the Holding Company | My guess is these were the dates played at the Red Dog Saloon with Janis Joplin. | |
| Friday | 15-Jul-66 | Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Love (Show Cancelled) | My guess is the run of Final Solution shows begins this weekend. | |
| Saturday | 16-Jul-66 | Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Love (Show Cancelled) | Probably the Final Solution. | |
| Friday | 22-Jul-66 | Probably the Final Solution. | ||
| Saturday | 23-Jul-66 | Muir Beach Resort, Marin County, CA: Sopwith Camel, Charlatans, Wildflower, and others (Beach Party) | Probably the Final Solution. | |
| Friday | 29-Jul-66 | Red Dog Saloon, Virginia City, NV Wildflower | Garden Auditorium, Pacific National Exhibition, Vancouver, BC Big Brother and the Holding Company, Al Neil Trio, Painted Ship, Ph Factor Jug Band, Al Neil and The Royal Canadians, Gerry Walker, Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Daily Flash, Local Bands, WECO light show (by Sam Perry, Gary Lee Nova, Dallas Selman, Ken Ryan, and others) [Trips Festival] | Probably the Final Solution. |

| Friday | 12-Aug-66 | "Benefit", San Francisco, CA Big Brother and the Holding Company, Jefferson Airplane & Grassroots (this would have been an afternoon show - perhaps in one of the parks) Then: Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Bo Diddley | Probably the Final Solution. | |
